About Our Services

Our VBS Clergy welcomes you to join us for High Holy Day services

Rabbi Nolan Lebovitz • Rabbi Ed Feinstein • Cantor Jacqueline Rafii • Cantor Phil Baron

Main Services

This year, as we joyfully renovate Niznick Sanctuary, our Main Services are held in two indoor spaces: Malkin Burdorf and Sher Lopaty. Services are led by VBS Clergy – Rabbi Nolan Lebovitz, Rabbi Ed Feinstein, Cantor Jacqueline Rafii and Cantor Phil Baron – with musical accompaniment by piano, guitar and a professional choir. Main Services include our traditional prayers, reading of the Torah and Rabbi's sermon. Reserved seating is included with VBS Premier Membership. All remaining seating is open and unassigned.

Traditional Services

Traditional Services offer a fuller rendition of the holiday prayers without musical accompaniment. Services are mostly held in Rosen Library, located on the lower levelof the Levine Community Center, and move to Sher Lopaty for Mincha and Neilah on Yom Kippur. These services are officiated by VBS Rabbinic Intern Jared Skoff and led by members of our congregation and include more traditional liturgy and a Rabbi's sermon.

Sephardic Services

Sephardic Services are led by guest Sephardic Cantors and a Rabbi, offering traditional Sephardic melodies. This year, services are held in Schulweis Chapel and in the Levine Community Center Gym. Please refer to our service schedule for service times and locations.

Family Services

Family Services welcome families with young children, led by VBS Rabbinic Intern Avi Kushlan and our Family Service Musicians. Tot Shofar is tailored to our littlest congregants – preschool-aged five and under – and their families, while B’Yachad is offered to elementary school-aged children and their families. These lively service options include singing and storytelling.

Eternal Life by Dara Horn

What would it really mean to live forever? Rachel is a woman with a problem: she can’t die. Her recent troubles – widowhood, a failing business, an unemployed middle-aged son – are only the latest in a litany spanning dozens of countries, scores of marriages, and hundreds of children. In the 2,000 years since she made a spiritual bargain to save the life of her first son back in Roman-occupied Jerusalem, she’s tried everything to free herself, and only one other person in the world understands: a man she once loved passionately, who has been stalking her through the centuries, convinced they belong together forever.

But as the twenty-first century begins and her children and grandchildren – consumed with immortality in their own ways, fromthe frontiers of digital currency to genetic engineering – develop new technologies that could change her fate and theirs, Rachel knows she must find a way out.

Gripping, hilarious, and profoundly moving, Eternal Life celebrates the bonds between generations, the power of faith, the purpose of death, and the reasons for being alive.

Rabbi Lebovitz interviewed Dara Horn in his latest episode of
"Thinking Aloud with Rabbi Nolan Lebovitz."
