The 5 Foods You Must Eat for Israel’s Birthday

From hummus to homemade pita,
these are the foods you should enjoy this week.

It’s Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day, which makes it an awesome time to eat some Israeli food.

I have been in love with Israeli eats ever since my first trip to the country more than 15 years ago. I love the vibrancy of spices, the freshness of produce and how the diversity of Jews from all over the world have influenced what we now consider “Israeli” food. And these days you can find Israeli food all over the U.S.: from Portlandto Philadelphia, Israeli-inspired food is one of the trendiest cuisine enjoyed by more and more Americans.

Even babies loves Israeli food! Here is my daughter enjoying her own bowl of French fries dipped in hummus in Tel Aviv a few years ago. I mean, I really just wanted to share this adorable photo of my kid shoving hummus in her face.

So even if you’ve never been to Israel or don’t have access to any delicious Israeli eateries, you can still enjoy some classic, delicious Israeli fare from your own kitchen.

Here are five of my favorites:

  1. Sabich – an Iraqi eggplant, egg and potato sandwich
  2. Classic Homemade Hummus
  3. Shakshuka, eggs baked in spicy tomato sauce
  4. Whole Roasted Cauliflower with Tahini and Tomato Salsa – whole roasted cauliflower is a very popular dish around the world these days which actually originated in Israel!
  5. Fluffy, Homemade Pita Bread
