Bubby's, the eagerly anticipated community café and meeting spot, is now open and ready to welcome you here at VBS. We're proud to serve high quality organic, locally roasted coffee alongside a menu of delicious baked treats, seasonal salads & sandwiches and more. Embracing our community's values is at the heart of Bubby's, where we offer a welcoming atmosphere that fosters deeper connection and engagement for families, staff, and visitors while also supporting the synagogue. ABOUT BUBBY

Bubby’s is named in honor of Deborah (Debby) Barak, beloved grandmother of VBS students, Henry (VBSDS '29) and Hazel (VBS ECC '23). Debby passed away earlier this year after her 2-year battle with cancer. Her son, Jonathan, and daughter-in-law, Hanna, worked together with VBS leadership and good friend and community member, Lemor Kubryk, to bring Bubby's warm presence to VBS. Bubby Debby is very dearly missed by her children and grandchildren: Jonathan, Hanna, Henry and Hazel Milgrom, Hannah Milgrom and Paul Brumfield, and Sarah, Aaron, Miles and Livia Buchsbaum.

Bubby’s at VBS embodies what Debby loved most – the Jewish community and spending quality time with cherished friends and family, and especially her grandchildren.

All reports indicate that Debby took her professional life seriously while at work, even though she left little trace once at home. Family, and friends who were like family, were her only focus. Coffee was often involved, whether hanging with her “Birthday Crew” of friends at Peet’s Coffee in Studio City, or making cappuccinos for her children at home using her barista-level espresso machine that took up half her kitchen – one of those late-in-life splurge purchases.

BUBBY'S FUND

In the spirit of Debby's legacy, The Milgroms have also established Bubby’s Fund to provide Bubby’s gift cards to VBS teachers and staff, and free coffee for our tireless security team (for whom we are now more thankful than ever). If we take with us one thing from Debby's legacy, it is that life is for the living. Time is precious and best spent chatting with family and friends over a large cap, extra shot.

Community-Led Service

Bubby's is a volunteer-driven system that relies on the power of community to service others. Sign up for a cashier shift to run the point-of-sale system inside Bubby's cart. Receive a free beverage or food item for every shift you work!
