K'lal Yisroel
K'lal Yisroel
Commentary by Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis
This next window is dedicated to the conception of K'lal Yisrael, the unity of the Jewish people. And that's expressed by the in-gathering of the four fringes of the prayer shawl before you say the"Sh'ma Yisrael Adonai Elohenu, Adonai echad," "Hear O Israel, the Lord our God. The Lord is one." And in that prayer there is a praise which says, "V'havienu l'shalom v'arbah kanfot ha-aretz" "Gather us in peace from the four corners of the earth." Though it's a symbol of unity, it's a symbol of an in-gathering of the people, and it includes, of course, a picture of the globe. We Jews have been inevery continent and are in every continent in the world. We have experienced all kinds of governments and administrations, from totalitarian to democratic.
