Shabbat Shira - info
Join the VBS Choir, Cantors and Music Director Dr. Noreen Green for our annual Shabbat Shira service. – February 3, 2012 – 8 pm. Valley Beth Shalom.
For 18 years we have been presenting music from past to present to highlight the contributions of Jewish composers. This year we present “Our LA Legacy” – I chose composers that are may be less known to VBS listeners, composers like Chuck Feldman who for years was the conductor/composer at Wilshire Blvd Temple and followed in the footsteps of Max Helfman at Brandeis in Simi Valley. William Sharlin, who created the beautiful music known and enjoyed by congregation Leo Baeck; Maurice Goldman, an internationally renowned composer who spent several years at Adat Ari El (then VJCC). Our own Ami Aloni, Phil Baron and Chris Hardin, will be heard, and also some of our recent composers from the Helfman Institute – Bob Remstein, and Michelle Green Willner, of course, Michael Isaacson, whose music has been performed all over the Jewish world; Danny Maseng who recently joined our LA community at Temple Israel of Hollywood and Les Deutsch, a wonderful composer and the son of recently deceased VBS ba’al t’kiah (shofar blower) extraordinaire, Ralph Deutsch. The week of Feb.3 is the first Yarzheit of Debbie Friedman and we pay a special tribute to her vast contribution to the Jewish Music scene with an arrangement by Helfman Institute composer, James Fuchs.
Hope to see you there!
