In frequent consultation with our Medical Advisory Committee and state and county health authorities, we are closely monitoring the impact COVID has on our plans to spend a meaningful High Holidays together. We will provide updates on our evolving plans and communicate them regularly. We thank you for your flexibility, patience and understanding as we continue to update our protocols and plans.

We are thrilled to once again offer beautiful, professionally produced High Holiday services online at VBS TV. NEW THIS YEAR: Our broadcast streaming platform is available in the App store for Android and Apple! Download the VBS TV app for your Smart TV, Apple TV (iOS), iPhone, iPad, Roku, Amazon Fire TV and Android TV (Google Play).

This year, we ask all VBS members to indicate your High Holiday service preferences, regardless of prior year’s selections. 

Service selections include unassigned seats. Upgrades to reserved seats in our Main Sanctuary Service apply to those in our Premier program. Learn more at vbs.org/premier. Opportunities to purchase additional tickets were required by August 15, 2021, on our 2021 High Holiday Seating Form (here).

For those who have not yet renewed VBS membership for 2021-2022, we welcome you to join us again this year. We cannot confirm any High Holiday services seat selections without your completed membership. Please visit vbs.org/renew to log in and renew your membership online. 

High Holiday Service Options

Service options are subject to change according to changes determined by the impact of COVID as advised by our Medical Advisory Committee.  The health and well-being of our VBS community members continues to be our first priority. We are especially vigilant for the vulnerable among us, our children and our elders. Masks will be required at all times while at VBS.

Main Services

Led by Rabbi Ed Feinstein, Rabbi Noah Farkas, Cantor Phil Baron, Cantor Herschel Fox and a small choir in the Niznick Sanctuary. The Main Service will be about two hours long, including our traditional prayers, reading of the Torah and the Rabbi’s sermon. 
Except for sections reserved for Premier members and their family, all seating will be unreserved/open.

Sephardic Services

Led by Sephardic Cantors and a Rabbi in Sher-Lopaty Chapel. 

Traditional Minyan Services

Hosted in Malkin Hall with open (unassigned) seating for all. The Traditional Service will offer a fuller rendition of the holiday prayers, led by members of our congregation, with teaching offered by Rabbi Cheryl Peretz, Associate Dean of the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at American Jewish University, who will be joining us for the holidays.

A professionally produced online broadcast service from our in-house studio for those who prefer to join a virtual worship experience from home.

Youth and Family Programming

Join VBS for fun-filled and meaningful High Holiday opportunities for families with children – on site, off site and online! We are offering a variety of thoughtful and engaging experiences, from a Rosh Hashanah Pop-Up to a Beach Service to virtual services.

VBS Food Bank Collection

Help VBS and SOVA alleviate hunger together. The VBS Food Bank helped feed more than 1,000 hungry families last year. Item drop off available at VBS beginning on Erev Rosh Hashanah and throughout Yom Kippur. Urgently needed items include:

  • Tuna
  • Mac & Cheese
  •  Canned Soup
  • Peanut Butter 16oz
  • Canned Fruit
  • Canned Tomato Sauce 16oz

Non-expired food items only. No glass containers. No Costco/bulk size items, please.

Adult Shoe Collection

VBS supports the Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission, working to make homelessness history by offering immediate assistance and long-term solutions to those experiencing poverty and hunger. You can help by bringing gently used or new shoes in all adult styles for donation.

Women’s Center Collection

Help women in Los Angeles find a path to personal stability. The Downtown Women’s Center is on a mission to end homelessness for women through housing, wellness, employment and advocacy. We are collecting brand new women’s underwear in sizes 4-8 (XS-M) for donation.
